Frequently Asked Questions

What are the requirements to run for a BOD position?

You must be a current BCom student enrolled in the current and following year. If you plan on taking an Exchange or Co-op term, you must declare it beforehand, but are still eligible to run.

Should I run for a position?

Absolutely yes! It can be a nervous feeling to put yourself out there as a candidate, but being a BOD is an extremely rewarding opportunity. As a BOD, not only are you one of the main student voices for advocacy, change, and leadership – it is a catalyst to meet and work with new people in the Society and gain invaluable experience.

Why should I vote? Does it even matter?

Regardless how small 1 vote may seem, it 100% matters. With a high voter turnout, elections remain competitive, which ensures that an accurate representative of the CUS is chosen. It is your right as a member of our Society to be able to vote for your leaders – please use it!

I don’t know who to vote for – why should I vote?

We encourage you to check out our “Candidate” page, to learn more about your fellow Sauder students and learn more about their views and goals. You can also check out their platforms to learn more about them too!

Every election ballot also contains an “Abstain” option.

Why are the Elections so early in the semester?

In accordance with Article 4 Sec. 4.03 in the Code of Procedures, Elections must host it’s first event, and in effect, it’s subsequent events, within the first 14 days of the first academic term for Fall Elections, and 21 days of the second academic term for Winter Elections.

How much can I spend for my campaign?

Candidates are allowed to spend a maximum of $50 CAD for their campaign, with a maximum unit cost of $4 CAD. The Elections Committee will reimburse the full $50 for candidates.

Is there any support offered to candidates?

Yes! Candidates can reach out anytime to any member of the Elections Committee for guidance and assistance with the Elections Process. Please note that the Elections Committee cannot endorse any candidate.

I’m a candidate and I wish to drop out!

Candidates who wish to drop out must email a letter of resignation to elections@cus.ca that incudes the following:

- Full Name

- Student Number

- Phone Number

- Email Address

- A brief statement of intent that details the candidate’s wish to drop out of the election
